I love Human Target. It’s a nice, fun, action packed show and Jackie Earle Haley is nothing short of genius in it. Mark Valley is nothing to scoff at either. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about a guy named Christopher Chance (Valley) and his two buddies, Winston (played by Chi McBride) and Guerrero (Haley) and how they help protect various people from danger. And whatnot.
One thing about the show that drew me to it in the first place when it started its first season was the fact that Bear McCreary would be doing the score. Now, for those who know what a BSG freak I am, know that I love, and I mean LOVE Bear McCreary’s music. The score for all four seasons of BSG are sitting in my car as I type this. His music is just….awesome. I can’t put it any other way.
Naturally I was excited to hear he’d be sticking around TV land after BSG went off the air and after Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles got canceled. Once the show aired and I got to hear the music I was hooked that much more. The first season was chock full of beautiful arrangements, sweeping orchestral pieces and a theme that rivaled the best film scores out there. Bear was even so kind as to update his blog with each episode and he would discuss how he came to score certain pieces and would even post fun videos of his time in the studio. It was amazing.
The first season ended with a positive outlook. Then word came down that Bear was not asked back to score the upcoming second season. Heart. Broken. I was actually pretty pissed about the news. I know, getting all mad over something so seemingly trivial is just silly. Especially when there’s other news to piss me off even more…ehem….Lois Lane casting….ehem. Back to the subject at hand….
The second season started and when I sat down with Roomie and kid to watch the premier the three of us sat there aghast at what unfolded as the new theme song. It. Just. Wasn’t. Right. Gone was our beloved orchestra themed opening. Now it’s been replaced by…by…something else. I’m not saying it’s bad, but if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it!
The overall tone of the show has changed and this is due to the music. There are parts where I’m completely disengaged due to what’s happening with the score. I still love the show, but I miss Bear’s music. I want it back. His music is like being cuddled in a nice warm blanket and now I’m left to shiver. Poor me. I mean, I understand. Funding a 40+ piece orchestra can get kind of pricey. Tim Jones is the guy with the job now and since he’s not working with all of those musicians, the price tag is probably a little more affordable. But it still irks me dammit.
Anyway, enough of that. I’m here to throw down the first of what, I’m sure will be many Colosseum battles! Season 1 theme vs. Season 2 theme. So below I present to you, the Season 1 opening theme:
And here is Season 2. Sorry it’s just a tired old link. I couldn’t find one with the embed code enabled.
Give them both a listen and then come back and leave a comment to let me know which one you like. We’ll see which one wins this battle.Tags: Bear McCreary, Chi McBride, Human Target, Jackie Earle Haley, Mark Valley, Music, Tim Jones
