SyFy: Bringing Awesome Back This Summer
Ok, so while I’m still peeved with SyFy for canceling Stargate Universe, they’ve made up for just a little bit with Being Human. I’ve made my love for that show abundantly clear and if you follow this site you already know this. I’m still a little sore at them however for not really having any sci-fi but hopefully that will be remedied soon.
The network just released and updated press release giving air dates for some of the returning shows. Eureka and Warehouse 13 will both be back starting July 11th and Haven is set to return on July 15th. I never picked up Eureka or Warehouse 13 which I probably should have because I’ve heard nothing but good things about both shows. I did watch Haven. The first season may be a been a little rough in parts, but it was enjoyable so I’m looking forward to its return.
My main complaint with SyFy is all of the reality programming that they have now. It’s not just SyFy however. It’s every network. Every time I turn on the TV and scroll through the guide it’s inundated with reality programming. I don’t care about Swamp People or Real Housewives or the Bad Girls Club. The kicker though, was when I saw a reality show about taxidermists. A SHOW ABOUT TAXIDERMY! Are you serious? Apparently someone wants to watch it because it’s on the air. That’s a post for another time though.
Back to SyFy. I’m ok with Destination Truth or the occasional Ghost Hunter episode. The press release noted four different reality shows. Three making a return and one new one. Add those to the ones that already air and top it all off with wrestling and it’s no wonder there’s no room for the sci-fi. This post is turning out much more snarky than what I had originally intended so let me get back on base here.
The “Awesome” that I speak of in the title has to do with SyFy’s Saturday night movies. I joke with my roommates about how bad those movies really are, but people must like them because more and more get made. They’re like a train wreck, you don’t want to watch, but you can’t turn away.
In a press release from March, they told of titles like Snowmageddon and Jersey Shore Shark Attack to premier in 2011 and 2012 respectively. But with the new press release, we have actual dates for films like Swamp Shark, Ice Road Terror and Super Eruption! The synopsis sold them all for me. This is straight from the press release:
Ice Road Terror – Saturday, June 11, at 9PM (ET/PT) — Truckers (Brea Grant, Michael Hogan) face a deadly ice creature on the frozen roads. A production of ARO Entertainment.
Swamp Shark – Saturday, June 25, at 9PM (ET/PT) — Kristy Swanson, D.B. Sweeney and Robert Davi star in the story of mutant sharks terrorizing the Louisiana bayous. A production of Active Entertainment.
Super Eruption — July — A scientist and a park ranger (Juliet Aubrey, Richard Burgi) try to stop the eruption of a massive volcano under Yellowstone Park. A production of MarVista Entertainment.
I have to say that I will most likely watch all of those. And no….I’m not joking. Col. Tigh from Battlestar Galactica is in Ice Road Terror and that’s all that needs to be said about that. The SyFy film I’m most looking forward to though is Red Faction: Origins. This one is based on the video game and stars Robert Patrick, Brian J. Smith and Kate Vernon. Ok, the T-100, Lt. Matt Scott (SGU) and Ellen Tigh (BSG)! What’s not to love? Oh! And the score is done by Bear McCreary! It just doesn’t get any better than that.
Set your DVR’s people. You won’t want to miss any of this. But remember, if you do, I’ve got your back. Chances are good I’ll watch and review.

I love the Saturday night movies. Some of them are really bad but I love them. I’m such a dork because I love watching the Saturday premiere. Eureka is actually really great and I’m glad that it’s coming back. I actually never really got into Stargate Universe but I was in love with Caprica. Sucks they cancel both of them.
I actually don’t like the reality shows on Syfy now or ever. Hated Wednesday nights because of Ghost Hunters. I do like Face-off because it shows the creation of the monster that we may see in the future Saturdays. Right now, I’m okay with Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen because it does have science.
Some of them are so bad I can’t even get through them, but these new ones coming up look to be divine! I think I may have to get Eureka on DVD and get caught up. I’ve heard great things about that show. I’m still bummed about Caprica but hopefully BSG: Blood & Chrome will fill the BSG void. I did catch one episode of Marcel’s Quantum Kitchen and that guy is nuts! It’s crazy the stuff he can do.
And while I do despise the reality programming, I did watch Face Off. I found that one to be pretty cool. I liked seeing all the challenges but hated all the dramatic editing and pregnant pauses that were used. But it’s all part of reality TV and that’s what DVR is for
Marcel is crazy but he is so awesome. I didn’t know there was going to be another BSG. When is that coming out? Eureka is awesome and if you can catch up, you totally should.
Face-off was cool, just did not like Jo and the other girl constantly fighting. But I’m glad that it focused more on the competition than in the inner squabbles unlike ANTM.
Oh I hated the strife between Jo and Megan or whatever her name was. I really liked all the challenges that they did. As for the new BSG show, they’re filming now I believe. It’ll take place during the first Cylon War with a young Bill Adama when he was a viper pilot. I just wish SyFy would get more Sci-Fi. That Alphas looks promising. I just added Eureka to my instant queue on Netflix so I can start watching that. Yay!
I took your advice and started watching Eureka. I watched the pilot last night. It’s pretty good so far
Sweet! It really is awesome. I was so in love with Dr. Nathan Stark. Anyways, I hope you do like it.
