The Goddess Goodie Wrap – 5/27/11
The internet never ceases to amaze me. Every week when I’m putting the Goodie Wrap post together I wonder what crazy things I’m going to come across. This week we’ve got some Star Wars (of course), Star Trek, a couple of videos that just made me laugh as well as question some people’s sanity and an example of how magnificent Michael Sheen really is. Onward ho!
Ridiculously Creative:
I’ve never been to a soapbox derby car race, but I know that in some parts of the country they’re pretty popular. This guy takes it to a whole new level by building an X-Wing Fighter Soapbox Derby Car. This baby come complete with a functioning R2 unit as well. How cool is that?! Surprisingly the cost to build this came in at about $75. Utilizing recycles parts and with the help of an old NES controller, this guy managed to make all the Star Wars fans at the event weep with envy. Oh! He even sported the X-Wing pilot helmet! Check out the original article at Instructable.com for the complete story on the build and additional photos. (via Nerd Approved)
Time Wasters:
I came across TotallyLooksLike.com when I was writing my mistaken identity post from yesterday. I ended up burning so much time looking at this it was just ridiculous. The premise is simple; two things that look-alike shown side by side. I say things because it’s not always people who are being compared as evidenced by the picture above. Just check it out for yourself.
Silly:
The Grillenium Falcon:
Best. Food Truck. Ever! How could you pass this up? The Grillenium Falcon blesses the townsfolk of Fayetteville, AR with its culinary delights and I’m sure those are the best grilled cheese sannies ever. Even if they are just meh, the fact that they came from this truck makes them automatically delish. Well played indeed. (via TDW)
Star Trek Inspired Resort:
Yes, I’m sticking this under the Silly section, because quite frankly, it is. I mean, it’s kind of cool, but really? This thing has a $1 BILLION price tag and is going to be located in……Jordan. Not Jordan, Minnesota, but the country Jordan….in the Middle East. Apparently it will provide:
“a variety of multi-sensory 23rd-century experiences, culminating with a state-of-the art space-flight adventure that takes real-time immersive entertainment experiences to bold new heights.”
Yes yes yes….but will it have a functioning holodeck? Because if not, then forget it. Although since it’s based on J.J. Abrams 2009 version, I guess it wouldn’t since they didn’t have those yet. The resort is expected to be completed in 2014. Guess that gives all those Trekkies/Trekkers time to save their cash. (via Nerd Approved via DVICE)
50 Funniest Movie Title Translations:
Way back in 1997 I went to the UK for a week and traveled from London all the way up to Inverness in Scotland. I stopped in various cities along the way and bummed around town. Every once in a while I’d wander into a video store and check out the movies they had and I was always bewildered by the difference in titles. Why was it The Professional in the US but Leon in the UK? Beats me. Anyway, ShortList.com has some of the greatest movie title translations ever. Just click that link and hover over the picture. Classic stuff!
Videos:
Darth Vader Salsa Trombone Player:
I don’t know either. Just go with it.
Muppet Bohemian Rhapsody:
In honor of the new Muppet film that’s coming out, I’d thought I’d just throw this in here just because it makes me laugh. Animal is the best part.
Random News & Tidbits:
Vincent Price, Christopher Lee and Lou Gossett Jr. are just a few actors who share a birthday today.
74 years ago today, San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge was opened to the public for Pedestrian Day.
Need to catch up on some odd news? Do that here.
Michael Sheen was awesome in Frost/Nixon and The Damned United. But he really shines here. Hilarious!
That’s it for this week folks. I wish you all a fabulous holiday weekend!
