Today We Celebrate Our Independence Day!

Independence Day Banner

Today is the Fourth of July also known as Independence Day.  Which makes me think of Independence Day.  Although all of the movie and cable television channels make sure we don’t forget about because they show it all. The. Time!

This was the film that put Will Smith on the map as a man of action.  This film also blew up the White House along with other treasured landmarks.  But aside from all of that, this film also had one of the greatest speeches ever.  That scene has a couple of cool aspects to it as well.

Originally the filmed was given the moniker ID4 due to a legal battle over the name Independence Day.  The final line in President Whitmore’s speech was not in the original draft.  It was “added at the last-minute for dramatic effect in an effort to convince 20th Century Fox not to avoid a legal battle to earn the right to name the film “Independence Day.” (via IMDB)

Also the scene was filmed in front of the hanger that once housed the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima during WWII, the Enola Gay.  The scene was filmed on August 6, 1995.  50 years to the day that the Enola Gay delivered the bomb. (via IMDB)

Pretty cool tidbits there.  Regardless of where or when it was shot, it remains one of the best speeches out there.  And since most people are celebrating our Independence Day, here’s the clip.  Happy 4th everyone!
