Well things are moving forward with the new Superman reboot, Man of Steel.  Today Warner Bros. sent out a press release that details the cast as well as a photo of Henry Cavill in the iconic blue and red suit.  The results are pretty cool looking, but I do have some questions.

First off, the official press release:

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new “Man of Steel,” revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.

The film also stars three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar-nominee Diane Lane and Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner.

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe.

Rounding out the cast are Harry Lennix as U.S. military man General Swanwick, as well as Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy.

“Man of Steel” is being produced by Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer, from a story by Goyer and Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Comics. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

Now on to the photo.  The suit looks like it’s got some funky texture to it.  It’s not smooth looking like the previous suits, but instead looks more like armor.  It actually kind of reminds me of Thor’s costume, with that scale-y look.  Is it supposed to be more of an armored suit?  If so why?  He’s Superman.  He doesn’t need body armor….his body IS armored.  I can see what looks to be a belt, but I can’t tell if he’s wearing the briefs or not.  If not, no big deal, but then why the belt?  I like the cape, and it looks like it may hit right at the floor when he’s standing up straight.  It’s hard to tell for sure while he’s crouching down like he is in the picture.  I’d like to see a side view to see what that is on his right thigh.  Padding? Some sort of design?  The “S” and the boots have that same textured look as well.

This is obviously a photo taken for publicity purposes as they haven’t started filming yet so it’ll be interesting to see what comes down the pipeline as filming commences.  I don’t know very much about Henry Cavill, but he’s definitely got the look.  I’m not quite sure about that hair though.  Take a look at the photo below and click on it for a larger version.   Man of Steel is set to be released on June 14, 2013.
