New Trailer for The Bourne Legacy Shows It’s Not Just a Knockoff

The Bourne Legacy - Jeremy Renner

The first teaser for The Bourne Legacy hit back in February.  It didn’t show a whole lot, but did manage to pique my interest.  I’ve loved the Bourne series and even though I wasn’t against the direction they decided to go, I still have my reservations about it.  That first trailer was pretty convincing however.  Today a longer trailer was released, and with it, we get to see that this film isn’t just trying to cash in on the Bourne franchise name, which is a plus.

The Bourne Legacy sees Jeremy Renner take over as Aaron Cross, an original character, in an original story based on the Robert Lundlum series.  After watching the trailer a couple of times it looks like the events of this film may even overlap a bit with The Bourne Ultimatum.  Either than or they’re flashing back to an event in that film.  I could totally be wrong, but we’ll have to see what happens when the film finally comes out.

This film also sees the return of Joan Allen, David Starthairn, Scott Glenn, and Albert Finney, all resuming their roles in the previous films.  Newcomers to the franchise are Rachel Weisz, and Edward Norton.  Tony Gilroy replaced Paul Greengrass and the director and he along with Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay.  By the looks of it, they’ve done a pretty bang up job.  I hate to judge a movie on the trailer because it’s so easy to be wrong, but this looks like it could kick some serious ass and looks to fit quite nicely in the Bourne world.

Jeremy Renner has been super busy lately what with starring in three…count them….three major film franchises.  His involvement with the Mission Impossible franchise, Avengers and now the Bourne franchise assures that he’s arrived.  Not too shabby for a kid from Modesto, CA.

The Bourne Legacy will be released on August 3, 2012.
