Goddess Rant: Final Season of Weeds
Actually this isn’t really a rant. But it’s not a rave either. On July 19, 2011 I posted a rant about Weeds and the decline of what was once an incredible show. In my rant, I mainly focused on the fact that the main character, Nancy, had turned into a self-serving bitch and how it really irritated me. It was so bad I barely made it through the rest of the season and when the finale aired, I was relieved that last season ended with a bang. Literally. A sniper had Nancy in his sights, fade to black, gunshot, credits. Pretty ballsy way to end the season, but both Roomie and I agreed that if it didn’t come back, that was a decent ending. I’d be ok with it. Mainly because I didn’t want to see it come back in the same form that had been leading up to my disenchantment.
To say I started this most recent, and final, season with apprehension is an understatement. I really didn’t want to watch the two episodes I had on the DVR because Nancy was such a pain in the ass last season and I just couldn’t deal with X amount of episode of ALL THAT again. It occurred to me that the tone of the show changed, once they changed the opening credit sequence. If you remember, back in the day, it started with that quirky “Little Boxes” tune. Then they changed it up a little, kept the tune, but had other artists perform it. Ok. I was ok with that. Then the sequence changed altogether and that’s where I pinpoint the show’s downfall.
Imagine my surprise when I watched the season premier and saw that they went back to their roots. Lo and behold, I was greeted to an animated opening sequence, that, if you have followed the show from the beginning, is all too familiar, and heard that quirky tune again. I actually smiled and said to Roomie “Ohhh, they went back to the beginning!” We watched the second episode and it was the same animation, but someone else singing the tune, which was great. When they did that before there was one kick ass version but for the life of me I can’t remember who did it. If anyone has a list, let me know.
As for Nancy, well…so far she’s not the same person she was at the end of last season. For that, I’m infinitely thankful. I really didn’t want to hate on her but it was getting to that point. In the two episodes that have aired, Mary-Louise Parker has shown me why I loved Nancy to begin with. The cast of this show is what makes it great and so far this season, so good.
This is the final season for Weeds and I’m really happy the writers are taking it back. It was getting a little out of control what with the whole Mexican drug cartel and Nancy in jail and whatnot. They really went back with the identity of the shooter as well, but I won’t mention who it is for fear of spoiling it for those who haven’t seen it yet. I’ll definitely stick with it to the end and hope that the rest of the season measures up. This was once a great, great show and I’d hate to see it end on a crap note.
