Alphas Recap: Episode 2.09 – The Devil Will Drag You Under
Last week Rosen confirmed that his daughter Dani was the mole. He confronted her about it at the end and she was arrested and taken to Alpha HQ. She pleaded with him to send her to Building 7 and implant her with a chip, but he offered her another option; go undercover. The fact that Rosen had her arrested infuriated Cameron and he made his feelings known. Things are quite messy to say the least and the season finale is fast approaching. I think it’s safe to say that it’s all about to hit the fan. The main question is, who will be left standing at the end?
The episode starts off with Rosen going over some paperwork with Dani. He’s anxious and nervous, but Dani seems calm, cool and collected. She’s signing official documents that lay out the terms of her undercover work. Fast forward a couple of weeks and Rosen tells the team that he hasn’t heard anything from Dani in two weeks. Naturally, he’s worried something may have happened to her. Cameron rubs it in his face that this is all Rosen’s fault and after some choice words, Cameron leaves and cuts off all communication with the team.
The team get wind of a robbery taking place at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and Bill and Nina are sent to stop it. They arrive on scene and where Scipio and another alpha nicknamed Dumpy, are stealing energy grenades. What shocks Bill and Nina is that Cameron shows up, and helps Scipio get away with the goods. Bill is able to stop Cameron but Dumpy sets off one of the grenades, knocking out Bill and Nina. When they come to, the others, including Cameron, are gone.
While Bill and the others try to figure out what Cameron’s play is, Cameron is taken to Stanton Parish’s compound. He wants to meet with Parish, but Scipio tells him it’s not time yet. Instead he is to meet with a woman named Agnes (played by BSG’s Kandyse McClure). Agnes’ ability is kind of like Rogue from X-Men in that she can’t touch anyone. Instead of sucking their power like Rogue does, Agnes is able to dig in to her victim’s head and see every thought….even the ones that they’re trying to hide. Cameron tells her he has nothing to hide and let’s her do her thing. She senses his love for Dani, but knows there is something else going on. He tells her to dig deeper because he’s not hiding anything, so she does. When Cameron regains consciousness, he’s in a room with Stanton Parish.
Parish tells him that he passed Agnes’ test but also tells Cam that he may not trust Dani as much as he once did. Picking up on something that Agnes said, Cam knows that Stanton is sending Agnes to pry into Dani’s brain as well. Later on, we see that Parish is holding Dani on a ship. He goes to see her and the two talk about their goals. Parish is convinced that the population needs to be culled (a nice term for murder), and the thought horrifies Dani, but she tries to get back into his good graces. He then tells her that Agnes will be paying her a visit, which terrifies her.
Agnes leaves the compound to head to meet with Dani, and Cameron follows her. Just as Agnes is about to get started, Cam rushes in and puts a stop to it. Agnes doesn’t fight and actually gives them a head start on their getaway. For such a small part, I have to give major kudos to Kandyse McClure here. Agnes can’t have any physical contact with anyone for fear of hurting them. This closes her off and you can see how it affects her. She can sense the feelings that Cam has for Dani and you know she wishes she could feel that same thing. It’s kind of sad actually. Anyway, McClure did a great job here. She’s very expressive, and the emotion was very obvious. Cameron wants to get Dani out, but she refuses to leave without trying to stop Parish’s plan. He plans on detonating the grenades at a major power hub, which will result in the death of thousands of people. Dani’s trying to redeem herself here and she’s adamant that they stop him.
Meanwhile at Alpha HQ, Bill’s trying to figure out how Cam got away. He finally puts it together that Nina pushed him and he goes to arrest her. She tries to get him to listen, but he’s too angry to hear what she says. Rosen shows up and tells Bill the truth. Nina pushed Bill to let Cam go, only because they sent Cam in undercover to get Dani. Nina pushed Cam in a way that would make him resilient to any type of mind manipulation, which is how he managed to fool Agnes. Now they just need to find Cameron and Dani. Luckily, Dani calls Rosen and tells him that they are both safe and are going to try to stop Parish’s plan. Rosen sends the team to the docks to help.
Back at the docks, Cam and Dani find Scipio loading a truck along with Dumpy and Kimi, another Building 7 alpha. Cam and Dani have the upper hand for about 2 seconds though. Dumpy has Cam and Kimi uses her ability on him, which results in him putting a gun to his head. The team rushes in just in time however, but Scipio gets away in the truck. Cameron hops on his motorcycle to chase him, and Dani jumps on as well. The rest of the team follows in the van. Cam is able to force the truck to crash, but by the time he reaches the truck, Scipio has fled once again. Cam opens the back of the truck and sees that they have turned it into a giant bomb and Gary informs the team that it crashed right where Parish wanted it…at a power station.
While Gary works on the power grid, Dani tries to buy some time by calling Parish from the back of the truck. She tells him that if he ever really loved her, he won’t detonate the bomb. She tells him that she’s doing what he taught her; fighting for something she believes in. He tells her that he’s very proud of her, but detonates the bomb anyway with her inside it. Just as the team pulls up in the van, she tells everyone to run. She dives out of the van and Rosen and Cam try to get to her, but the bomb explodes sending out a pulse wave that throws everyone back. Rosen is the first to come to, and he rushes to Dani’s side. Cam’s next and he calls for Nina to come help. They try to keep Dani alive and Nina even tries to push her to stay alive. Dani takes Nina’s hand and sends her emotions to Nina, who looks a bit stunned afterwards. The damage to her body is too great, and Dani dies in her father’s arms. Scipio and Parish wait for the explosion, but when it doesn’t come, Parish says that even though the city didn’t explode, the bomb did what it was supposed to do.
So….the repercussions of this are going to be nasty. Cameron and Rosen are going to be out for blood now that Dani is dead. I hope they touch on what went down between Nina and Dani too. My feeling is that Dani’s emotions told Nina that death is what she wanted. Three more episodes to go and then the finale. Will they get Parish? What else could possibly happen? We’ll find out more next week.
