Well crap.  I hate to say that this news doesn’t surprise me, but it doesn’t.  Word came down yesterday that Fox has officially cancelled the J.J. Abrams produced Alcatraz.  The bad news was reported by Deadline, who also stated that Fox decided to give Touch a second season.  Also on the chopping block for the network is their new series The Finder, which airs right before Fringe.

Fox also gave the order to pick up three new comedies, and two dramas.  I have a love hate relationship with television comedies.  If they are more sitcom-y, forget it.  I absolutely detest laugh tracks and refuse to watch them.  If the comedies are more like New Girl or Raising Hope, then I’m all over it.  As for the dramas, I getting a bit tired of the medical / police procedurals and that’s exactly what these new shows sounds like.

Normally each episode will focus on a character’s story both in Fairytale Land as well as Storybrooke.  But normally we also get to see what else is happening in and around each place as well.  A sort of white noise if you will.  There wasn’t much of that going on in this latest episode, aside from a bit with Regina.  Instead we finally find out who August really is, what he actually did with the book when it was in his possession and as a bonus, we get to see Regina taken down a couple of pegs.

I’m not exactly sure where things will end, but apparently the finale is supposed to have an “epic” battle.  If that’s the case then they’ve got some ground to cover with Emma especially after this week.  There are only two episodes left and I’m sure the finale will end with a cliffhanger.  If that’s the case then I really hope we’ll see a season two.  I don’t think ABC has said anything officially either way, but I imagine they will have some pretty pissed off fans if they cancel it.  I have to admit, I’d be one of them because I really really really want to see Regina get her just dues.

Back toward the beginning of the season, I noticed that Mr. Gold had the Genie’s lamp in his shop.  I wondered if and when the writers would tell that story and who would turn out to be the famous wish-granter.  Surprisingly, that story was told with this latest episode and to be honest, I was rather surprised at who it turned out to be.  I didn’t see that one coming at all.  So this week contained some surprises, more questions and a whole lot of frustration but it was another solid origin story.

This week’s episode was frustrating, intriguing, sad and somewhat satisfying all in one.  Those crafty writers managed to give us two worlds that share the same theme, yet go in complete opposite directions of each other.  This is the first episode since Graham’s death where I was internally rooting for something.  And yes, I’m still bitter about Graham.  But, this new stranger that rolled into town is a nice distraction.  Continue reading “Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 1.10 – 7:15 A.M.” »

This latest episode breaks away from the main characters again and introduces us to the story of Hansel and Gretel (aka Nicholas and Ava).  The telling of their story however gives us the opportunity to learn just a little bit more about Emma’s past, which fleshes out her character ever more.

The episode starts off in Storybrooke where Henry is in the drugstore looking at a comic book.  A young girl approaches and begins talking to him.  Henry’s at that awkward age and doesn’t quite know how to talk to her, but despite that, she asks him if he wants to hang out with her and her brother.  As they set to leave the drugstore, the owner, Mr. Clarke (aka Sneezy) stops Henry because he thinks Henry is shoplifting.  Turns out that the Ava only talked to Henry so that Nicholas could stash items in Henry’s backpack.

It’s been a couple of weeks since the last episode.  That episode being the one that crushed many a heart with Graham’s death.  To be honest I’m still pretty bummed out about it but my fingers are crossed we’ll get to see Jamie Dornan again in the form of the Huntsman.

Episode 8, titled Desperate Souls explores just how far one will go to “do the right thing”.  Sometimes it doesn’t turn out so well.  The bonuses with this episode is three-fold.  First, an ex-BSG cast member shows up.  Ty Olsson, who played Capt. Kelly on BSG has a bit of a role which made me happy and you all know how I feel about BSG.  Second, this episode was penned by the great Jane Espenson, which always puts a smile on my face.  And third, we finally get to see Rumpelstiltskin’s back story.

A couple of things that I’ve been speculating on came to fruition with this latest episode.  While it was a damned good one, it also destroyed me.  I applaud the writers to be brave enough to kill off a main character, especially when it’s someone who people seemed to really dig, despite some of their actions.  We’ve known about a death for a while now and while I had feeling who it would be, I spent the whole episode with fingers crossed that I was wrong.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t.  I mentioned a while back that I thought Graham was the Huntsman.  Since this was his back story we find out that yes, he is indeed the man sent by the Evil Queen to dispatch of poor, grieving Snow White.

This week we finally learn Charming/James/David’s back story.  Come to find out he’s not who we thought he was.  Mary Margaret finds a short-lived happiness, then gets really bummed out again and Emma discovers one of Graham’s secrets.  There wasn’t much Henry to be seen this week either.  Actually, aside from the major players we didn’t see much of anyone else.

After settling in last night to watch this latest episode it occurred to me just how much I missed it last week when it wasn’t on.  I guess I’ll have to get used to it since that pesky winter break will be coming up in a couple of weeks.  Way back in the pilot episode, we were introduced to Archie and his fairy tale alter ego, Jiminy Cricket.  This week we get a peek into his back story.

When I was a kid and wanted something really bad I used to always say “I’d do anything….” and my mom would would always counter with “Don’t say that. You wouldn’t do anything, you’d do almost anything.”  She also used to tell me to be careful what I wished for because you never know what will happen.  Superstitious? Yes.  But her voice still rings in my head even as an adult and I couldn’t help but think those same thoughts in the latest episode of Once Upon a Time.
