Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.20 – The Evil Queen

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.20 - Ethan Embry_Colin O'Donoghue

With Cora gone, it’s up to Regina to return to her status as the Big Bad of the show.  This week focuses on Regina’s past once again and the Evil Queen’s quest to find and kill Snow White.  Yes we know.  The Evil Queen hates Snow White.  Tell us something we don’t already know.  This time around however, the show looks a little bit deeper into Regina’s quest for acceptance and love; a theme that plays out in both Fairytale Land and Storybrooke.

On the plus side however, Hook is back.  Thank goodness.  Oh how I’ve missed his sarcasm and generally snarky disposition.  On the negative side, we also got some wretched CGI….again.  They really need to do something about that.  But, enough of all that, let’s talk about Greg and Tamara.  We know he’s looking for his father, but her reasoning hasn’t been revealed yet.  What is her story and how does it relate to what’s going on?  This damned show…even though I’m mad at it right now, it still manages to make me ask questions.  I guess that says something doesn’t it.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.19 – Lacey

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.19 - Emilie De Ravine

It’s been several weeks since we saw Once Upon a Time and now they’re back for the final four episodes of the season.  The “previously on” section took us through the bit with Neal introducing Emma to his fiance, the connection between Tamara and Greg, what happened to August, which I’m still sore about by the way, the drama with Belle losing her memory and the prophecy that Henry will be Gold’s demise.

I have to say that I’m not super impressed with this season.  I’ve gotten to the point where I just sort of throw my hands in the air and just say ok, whatever.  I think that August was the last straw for me if I’m being completely honest.  Hopefully these final episodes will being it all together.  And hopefully Hook will make an appearance again.  Last we heard of him he wasn’t in the closet that Neal stashed him in, but he hasn’t been seen since.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.18 – Selfless, Brave and True

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.18 - Eion Bailey

Since the curse was broken, and August just up and disappeared, I’ve been spinning my wheels wondering what happened to him.  Aside from Emma’s flashback episode, we haven’t seen hide nor hair, nor splinter for that matter of August / Pinocchio and I’ve been a tad irritated that they’ve waited this long to get back to him.  Given, his story plays a part of the overall arch that’s running this season, but still.  The fans have been waiting and finally, with this week’s episode, we find out what happened to August, and get a bit of a backstop on the why of his….well, we’ll call it his condition.

We also get a peek into Neal’s fiance, Tamara, and we learn a little bit more about Owen/Greg.  Where all of this is going, I’m not quite sure.  This season took a bit of a left turn from what I was expecting at the beginning of the season, and with four episodes left, I can only hope that they’ll start to bring it all together.  It looks like from this latest episode they’re doing just that.  At least…I hope.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.06 – Tallahassee

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.06 - Jennifer Morrison_Michael Raymond-James

Over the course of this series run, it’s been one back story after another, but we’ve not seen one concerning THE main character.  Emma’s past has been under wraps, with nary a trail of breadcrumbs.  That all changes this week however, and we finally get to see who Emma was prior to her bounty hunting days that kicked off the pilot episode.

Last week ended with Emma, Mary Margaret, Mulan, Aurora and Hook as they came upon the beanstalk.  There’s been a lot of talk about how Jorge Garcia was cast as the Giant and in this week’s episode, we finally get to see him.  I do like how the creators have brought back a couple of the Lost cast members and I had high hopes for this thread.  The one sacrifice that was made in this episode is the fact that there is nothing more than a minute or so spent in Storybrooke.  I’ll get to that at the end of the recap, along with my thoughts on this episode as a whole.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 1.21 – An Apple Red as Blood

Once Upon a Time - Episode 1.21 - Ginnifer Goodwin_Lana Parilla

Well, next week wraps up the first season of Once Upon a Time.  This latest episode was written by the incredible Jane Espenson, and the equally incredible David Goodman.  Both have been responsible for some of the season’s strongest episodes of the series thus far.  The same can be said for director Milan Cheylov, who also directed the episode that gave us Belle.

This week, things really start to pick up steam as we head into the season finale next week.  I don’t think they can just magically make Emma start to believe in everything by the end of next week’s episode.  That would be too much.  Instead I think they’re going to have her slowly see things differently and that’s what will do the trick.  Official word on a second season still hasn’t been given however.  Fingers crossed the finale gets enough viewers to convince the network to give it the go ahead.  With the way this week ended, I imagine it will be a cliffhanger.  If ABC pulls the plug, people are going to be pissed.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 1.20 – The Stranger

Once Upon a Time Episode 1.20 - Jennifer Morrison_Eion Bailey

Normally each episode will focus on a character’s story both in Fairytale Land as well as Storybrooke.  But normally we also get to see what else is happening in and around each place as well.  A sort of white noise if you will.  There wasn’t much of that going on in this latest episode, aside from a bit with Regina.  Instead we finally find out who August really is, what he actually did with the book when it was in his possession and as a bonus, we get to see Regina taken down a couple of pegs.

I’m not exactly sure where things will end, but apparently the finale is supposed to have an “epic” battle.  If that’s the case then they’ve got some ground to cover with Emma especially after this week.  There are only two episodes left and I’m sure the finale will end with a cliffhanger.  If that’s the case then I really hope we’ll see a season two.  I don’t think ABC has said anything officially either way, but I imagine they will have some pretty pissed off fans if they cancel it.  I have to admit, I’d be one of them because I really really really want to see Regina get her just dues.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 1.19 – The Return

EION BAILEY

After a two-week hiatus, I’m happy that Once Upon a Time is finally back.  We’re promised all new episodes through the end of the season, which sadly is only a short three weeks away.  The last episode was all about Regina and explained how and why she because the Evil Queen that we all know and love to hate.  We finally know about the secret that Snow spilled and the reason why she’s the target of the Queen’s hatred.  On the heels of answers, come more questions this week.

Just when you think you know something, your theory gets turned on its ear and new questions arise.  I guess that’s no surprise considering just who is behind this show.  It is from the same people who racked our brains with Lost after all.  This week we’re treated to another episode penned by the great Jane Espenson.  Her episodes tend to be very character driven and The Return is no exception.  She’s got a great handle on Rumpelstiltskin and that shines through here once again.
