Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.03 – Lady of the Lake

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.03 - Sinqua Walls

Leave it to the creators of Lost to bring audiences another show that jumps between three separate timelines.  The title of the episode immediately made me think that we’d be getting a storyline featuring someone from the King Arthur realm, and we did, just not in the manner I had thought.  Instead the central theme in this latest installment was all about a parent’s love of their child and that theme was prevalent in all three timelines.

Mulan (Jamie Chung), Aurora (Sarah Bolger) and Jefferson (Sebastain Stan) all return and we get introduced to another new character with the arrival of Lancelot (Sinqua Walls).  With all the new characters and jumping back and forth in time, this is quickly becoming a show that will need to be watched from beginning to end so you don’t miss anything.  For those who thought it would just be a fun little fairy tale type show, it has evolved to be much, much more.  This week, things kick off in the past Fairtytale Land, so we’ll start there.

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.02 – We Are Both

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.02 - Josh Dallas_Meghan Ory

After last week’s episode I was wondering how the writers were going to handle the dual storylines of Storybrooke vs. Fairtytale Land.  So far FTL stories have served as back-stories.  The FTL side of the season premier wasn’t a backstory, but instead showed events unfolding at the same time as what was happening in Storybrooke.  Would FTL continue on that path, or would we still get the back-story side of things?  If this latest episode is any gauge, we’ll get both, especially considering that’s where Snow and Emma are.  We Are Both continues to explore Regina’s back-story and what she was like pre-Evil Queen.  Both Regina and Mr. Gold had knowledge of their previous lives, but the others in town didn’t.  Even though Gold and Regina were the only ones to know the full story about FTL, more things will come to light about their past and that’s where I think it’ll get really interesting.

As far as Storybrooke goes, now that everyone knows who they truly are, they are going to have to reconcile their Storybrooke selves with their FTL selves.  Most characters shared certain personality traits with their FTL self, although some seemed to lack the clarity and really didn’t have a sense of self.  This was most prevalent in David/James/Charming.  I made a comment last week how David was wimpy compared to Charming and I was thankful that he knows who he is and will actually have some balls now, a point which is addressed in this latest episode.  Things aren’t all kittens and rainbows however…..

Once Upon a Time Recap: Episode 2.01 – Broken

Once Upon a Time Episode 2.04 - Jennifer Morrison_Daivd Anders_Lana Parilla

When we last saw Storybrooke, there was definitely a change coming.  Henry was in the hospital after eating Regina’s poisoned apple turnover that was meant for Emma.  Emma professed her unconditional love for Henry, which broke the curse hanging over Storybrooke.  Mr. Gold got Belle back, but decided Storybrooke needed some flavor, so he worked his mojo and brought magic to the little town because as he said it….magic is power.   Regina was holed up in her house looking forlorn and upset.  That is until she noticed the purple mist.  Emma questions what the mist is, to which Henry simply replies that it’s something bad.  Now with the recap out of the way, let’s talk about the second season premier.

Game of Thrones Recap: Episode 2.09 – Blackwater

Game of Thrones Episode 2.09 - Peter Dinklage

I think this is the episode that everyone who’s read the books have been waiting for.  We’ve been hearing all season about the impending war, but this second to the last episode finally brings the battle to King’s Landing in the true fight for the Iron Throne.  Normally the episodes, as well as my recaps, are split up by location.  There is so much going on all over Westeros and beyond that the story is  told in bits and pieces.  This week however, marks the first time that the GoT series focuses on one location for the entire episode.

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss bravely and wisely stepped back from this episode and instead turned over the writing duties over to the man himself, George R.R. Martin.  It’s rather fitting for the man behind the Song of Ice and Fire series to pen this episode considering it’s the biggest one so far.  Neil Marshall took over directing duties and if his work on The Decent shows anything, it’s that he’s capable of doing a lot with very little.
