Prometheus Review

Prometheus was THE movie for me this summer.  The one I’ve been craving for what seems like ages.  The one that I drooled over after having seen that first trailer.  When word came out that Ridley Scott was returning to the science fiction genre, I got goosebumps.  It was an Alien prequel, and then it wasn’t, but it was going to be set in the same universe.  Either way, I was happy.  I just wanted a good sci-fi movie.

There was a lot of hoopla surrounding this film and once the marketing machine started up, it was hard to shield myself from the tsunami of….stuff that littered the web.  Trailers, stills, clips, behind the scenes footage and lastly the viral marketing campaign.  In an attempt to remain as spoiler free as possible, I stayed away from all of it, with the exception of the first trailer, and one I happened to see at the theater only a couple of weeks ago.  I operate under the less-is-more theory.  I don’t want to know anything because I prefer to let it all unfold while actually watching it.  Which was a little hard considering the UK got the film a week before the States, but I prevailed.  Finally Prometheus hit Stateside and to say I was excited would be a huge understatement.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Review

Making its English language debut in 2009, the first installment in Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has sold tens of millions of copies.  Shortly afterward, the Swedish version of the film, directed by Niels Arden Oplev and starring Michael Nyqvist (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) and Noomi Rapace (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), opened to American audiences and was well received by both critics and fans of Larsson’s gripping novel.

As a huge fan of the book, then the Swedish version of the film, I welcomed the news of an American version with a cold shoulder.  I didn’t see the need for Hollywood to get their grubby mitts on a story that had A) just made its way to American shores and B) was excellent in its native language.  With the success that the material enjoyed, the conversion to an American film was only a matter of time.  David Fincher (The Social Network) was on board to bring his vision of the source material to the screen using Daniel Craig (Casino Royale) and Rooney Mara (The Social Network) as main characters Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salandar.  But the question was: will it be any good?

First Trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus

There has been so much speculation about Ridley Scott’s latest science fiction film, Prometheus.  Will it be a prequel to his classic Alien or not.  Will it involve the space jockey or not.  Apparently final word is that it is not so much a prequel, but will be relatable to the universe Scott created with Alien back in 1979.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Review

Sherlock Holmes Banner

Back in 2009 when Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes was released my first thought was: why?  The character has been done so many times and it’s always the same.  His version promised something different and it more than delivered.  Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock was fresh and exciting.  The film ended up being a hit and it also was one of the few that I actually bought.  On Blu-Ray even.  Of course there was going to be a sequel.  To which I again questioned: why?
